What is it like to live in Afghanistan?

When everyone I met asked me that question in passing I became frustrated. As if I could describe such a profound experience in in a minute or two! Initially I had trouble getting any words out. “It was so different,” I would say. Or “I felt like I had shifted to another century.” But expanding on that was complicated and I was often at a loss for words. Eventually, I pulled out stories in short soundbites but they didn’t satisfy me. I wanted to tell more. My soundbites didn’t give anyone a true sense of my life there or the lives of Afghans I met. Or how I grew from the experiences. I hope that my upcoming memoir fills this gap by offering a peek into the life I had there as I understand it now.
