When Faced with Uncertainty, Ride the Wave!

I submitted a book manuscript to my agent. He forwarded it to publishers. I feel edgy and tense, often perplexed as to why. The book has been percolating in my head for decades and I have been writing it on and off for so many years that I am ashamed to tell you the number. It means a lot to me.

The age-old whining voice of doubt creeps in. Is it good enough? Of course, I know that writing well about an interesting topic isn’t the only thing publishers want. It needs to sell. I fret. Will they like it? Will the market be big enough? So what to do as I wait?

David Peterson and David Goldsmith who are amazing coaches taught me about VUCA, a concept from the business literature - volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous situations. Like COVID-19, right? Made it through that so far. Ride the wave, they said. Balance, shift, re-balance while anticipating the rise and roll of the oncoming surf. Maybe I’ll get me a surf board.
